Harper announces candidacy in Brossard
La Prairie May 17, 2005
LONGUEUIL - Today, the Leader of the Conservative Party and Leader of the Official Opposition, Stephen Harper introduced the candidate of the Conservative Party for the riding of Brossard-La Prairie.
"I am very proud today to announce the candidacy of another Quebec Conservative candidate of exceptional quality. Mr. Tenzin Dargyal Khangsar, of Tibetan heritage, will be our candidate in Brossard-Laprairie. He was born in St-Hyacinthe, and lived on the South Shore of Montréal for more than 20 years. He is currently the National Coordinator of the Canada Tibet committee, a non-profit advocacy group of Tibetans and Canadians working towards the non-violent resolution of the issue of Tibet. Tenzin Dargyal Khangsar is largely credited for the present success of the Canadian Parliamentary Friends of Tibet, which is recognized as one of the most active friendship groups in parliament with a large membership from all parties.
" I first met Mr. Khangsar on the occasion of the visit of his holiness the Dalai Lama to Ottawa, last year, of which he was the main coordinator. I was very impressed then by the strength of his religious beliefs and his commitment to human rights. As a prominent member of the Asian Canadian community, Tenzin represents the true diversity of Brossard-La Prairie and of Montréal.
" I also understand that he is the first representative of the Tibetan community to run for elected office anywhere in the world, and by doing so he makes all Canadians proud. Tenzin has been a forceful and principled voice for human rights both here and abroad. Through his work on behalf of the Dalai Lama, Tenzin has demonstrated his commitment to human dignity, peace, and freedom. These values which he represents will find a welcome home in the Conservative Party, which has consistently been a champion of human rights in Canada and around the world.
"Mr. Khangsar is also a skilled businessman with a background in television, telecommunications and software. He is a co-founder of a software technology firm serving the television industry. Mr. Khangsar is part of the new generation of conservative candidates from Quebec. They come from different backgrounds, different regions and offer different skills and experiences. This is the mark of a party that can unite people to bring the change that we need.
"Thanks to this team of candidates, Quebeckers will not be forced to choose between the corruption of the Liberals and the powerlessness of the Bloc Quebecois. The Conservative Party offers another path: a federalism of openness, which respects the autonomy of the provinces and wants to bring fiscal balance between the federal government and the provinces. The Liberal Party is finished in Quebec - for at least a generation. But the majority of Quebeckers does not want separation.
"The Conservative party is well positioned to form the next government - an honest, forward-looking government. It is critical that Quebeckers play a major role in this government by electing Conservative members of parliament. "
